SAN FRANCISCO, California: In a major update that will move it closer to popular artificial intelligence (AI) assistants, such as Apple's Siri, OpenAI's ChatGPT will be able to have voice conversations with users and interact using images.
This week, OpenAI said its chatbot's new voice feature "opens doors to many creative and accessibility-focused applications."
Similar AI services, such as Siri, Google voice assistant, and Amazon.com's Alexa, are integrated within their respective devices and are often used to deliver information from the internet and set alarms and reminders.
ChatGPT's new voice feature can also narrate bedtime stories, settle debates, and recite user text input.
Spotify uses the same technology that enables its podcasters to translate their content in different languages, OpenAI said.
Users can take photos of their surroundings and ask the chatbot to "troubleshoot why your grill will not start, explore the contents of your fridge to plan a meal, or analyze a complex graph for work-related data," the company added.
Companies have used ChatGPT since its debut in 2022 for various tasks, such as writing computer code and summarizing documents.
Since then, Big Tech companies have scrambled to launch their own generative AI systems.
