WASHINGTON, D.C.: U.S. President Donald Trump has invited Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to visit the White House next week, a White House official said.
This announcement came just hours after a U.S. military plane left to return deported migrants to India.
Trump spoke with Modi on January 27, discussing immigration and urging India to buy more American security equipment. He also emphasized the need for fair trade between the two countries.
India is an important U.S. partner in countering China and wants to strengthen trade ties with the U.S. It is also seeking easier access to skilled worker visas for its citizens.
India hopes to avoid the high tariffs Trump has previously threatened, as he has criticized India's high taxes on U.S. goods.
The U.S. is India's largest trading partner, with trade between the two countries exceeding US$118 billion in 2023-2024. India had a trade surplus of $32 billion during that period.
